Mean Girls reunion

Quick answer: Lacey Chabert said she would welcome a Mean Girls reunion and imagined Gretchen Wieners as a mother with a teenager who dresses like her. Chabert remains in touch with her former castmates, but said she does not know whether another movie will happen.

Lacey Chabert would happily return for a Mean Girls reunion—and she already has a picture of what Gretchen Wieners’ life might look like. More than 20 years after the 2004 comedy, the actress is interested in revisiting the characters as adults, though she does not know whether another movie will happen.

“Who knows if it’ll ever happen, but if it did, I would absolutely be on board,” Chabert said. Asked about the prospect of another film, she added: “It would be a blast. Who knows if that’ll happen?”

That enthusiasm comes with a clear distinction: Chabert is sharing her willingness to return, not announcing a new project. Her comments focus on the possibilities for Gretchen and the friendships she has maintained with her former castmates.

Gretchen’s future could involve a very familiar teenager

For Chabert, the appeal of a reunion is finding out who these characters have become. Her own idea would give Gretchen a daughter with more than a little in common with her mother.

“I would love to know what Gretchen’s up to. I have some ideas. I would love to see all of these characters and where they are at this point in their lives. Gretchen probably has a teenager who’s very similar to herself, and they wear matching outfits. I could think of all of these fun scenarios,” she said.

The matching-outfits scenario is Chabert’s imagining of Gretchen’s future, rather than a confirmed storyline. Still, it offers a specific glimpse of what she would enjoy exploring if she played the character again.

“With any character, I love a reunion so much, especially now that more than 20 years have passed; it would be nice to see where these characters are,” she said. Chabert also described herself as “thrilled” at the possibility of returning to the role.

A previous reunion—and friendships that have lasted

Chabert has already revisited the world of Mean Girls alongside two of her co-stars. In 2023, she reunited with Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried for a commercial based on the original comedy.

That appearance is separate from the potential movie reunion she is discussing now. Away from work, however, the cast’s connections have continued through busy schedules and changes in their personal lives.

“We absolutely keep in touch. We’re all busy, and some of us are parents, but it’s been so nice to go through those phases of life together and share those experiences with each other. When we have the chance to catch up, it’s always really special,” Chabert said.

A recently rediscovered photograph prompted one such exchange with Seyfried. “I was cleaning out a box of photos the other day, and I found a photo I hadn’t seen in a long time from when we were filming. I texted it to Amanda. It was just so nice to reminisce about that time.”

Chabert also spoke warmly about remaining in contact with Seyfried and Lohan. She noted that she sees Jonathan Bennett very often because both actors work with Hallmark.

A playful nod to Mean Girls

Chabert’s comments also came as she teamed up with CESAR for a dog-friendly twist on one of the film’s memorable lines: “We Should Totally Just Eat CESAR.” The partnership gives her another opportunity to reference the comedy, even as a future film remains uncertain.

For now, Chabert’s position is straightforward: she would welcome a return to Gretchen, and she has ideas worth bringing to that conversation. Whether those matching mother-daughter outfits ever make it to the screen is a question her comments leave open.
