He was pretty popular in America and during the 1960s and 1970s, many Americans traveled to India to meet him and seek his blessings. He was called by his disciples as “Maharaj-Ji.”
There are several Baba Neem Karoli ashrams located in Kainchi, Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Shimla, Hanuman Gadi, and Neem Karoli village near Khimasepur in Farrukhabad, Lucknow. Neem Karoli ashram is also present in Delhi in India, and New Mexico, Taos in the USA.
In north India, Neem Karoli Baba is known as the “Miracle Baba”. He is said to possess many powers (siddhis). The baba could be in two places at one time, with the touch of a finger he could also put his disciples in the state of “Samadhi”. His teachings focus on the path of bhakti yoga. He touched the hearts of thousands of devotees with his non-traditional teachings.
Not all of his devotees got to meet him or feel his presence but established a deep connection with Neem Karoli Baba. American spiritual teachers Ram Dass and Bhagavan Das were his followers and so were musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal.

Neem Karoli Baba Train miracle
There is a story that Baba Lakshman Das aka Neem Karoli Baba boarded a train without a ticket. The conductor halted the train and forced Maharaj-ji to get off the train. He was dropped at the village of Neem Karoli, Farrukhabad district in U.P.
Astonishingly the train did not budge after Baba was dropped off the train. After several failed attempts at starting the train, a passenger suggested the conductor to bring back the sadhu on the train. When the conductor allowed Neem Baba Karoli to board the train it started again.
The incident goes that Neem Baba Karoli agreed to board the train under two conditions, he demanded a railway station to be built in the village of Neem Karoli and the railway company must treat sadhus better. The officials agreed and Baba Neem Karoli finally boarded the train. The train drivers proceeded only after the sadhu blessed them to move forward. The train moved after taking blessings from Baba. A train station was also built in the Neem Karoli village as pledged to Baba Neem Karoli. The locals named the sadhu as Baba Neem Karoli because he lived in the village of Neem Karoli for a while.
Neem Karoli Baba miracles are incomplete without Maharajji and the smallpox incident
As mentioned in the compilation of Ram Dass in Miracle of Love: Stories about Neem Karoli Baba,
Dada’s nephew was suffering from smallpox and he was at the last stage, the body was moved to the floor. It was suggested to give the patient a drop of water from the Ganga, with which Maharajji’s feet had been washed. The water was placed on the boy’s throat.
The boy sat up as soon as it was done and he was cured by the next day.
Neem Karoli Baba was present in the hills at that same time, many miles away. It is said that suddenly Maharajji developed spots all over his body. The mountain people were not aware of it as smallpox was not frequently seen in the hills. They thought of it as an allergy and applied lotion to treat it. By the next day, the spots vanished and Maharajji said,
“That was wonderful lotion. What could those spots have been? I must have been allergic to something.”
Later it was found that the boy’s cure and Maharajji’s spots coincided.
Miracle about the protective umbrella
As stated in The Divine Reality of Sri Baba Neeb Karori Ji Maharaj by Ravi Prakash Pande “Rajida”.
This is one of the most astonishing among Neem Karoli Baba miracles.
A disciple of Maharaj-ji, R.P. Vaish came to visit Baba in Kainchi ashram in 1967. The man was about to move to Delhi for work but desired to go on a trip to Kashmir before that. When Vaish was about to leave Baba gifted him an umbrella. He said,
“Keep it with you. It rains heavily there.”
Vaish was hesitant to take it and said that he already has one and this might serve someone at the ashram. He said,
“I have an umbrella at home. This one will serve many people here at the ashram.”
Neem Karoli Baba was adamant and asked him to keep the umbrella with him. While in Kashmir Vaish kept the umbrella with him. After returning to Delhi, he went back to return the umbrella to Baba. Baba Karoli refused to take it back from him and asked him to keep it with him as it will protect him. Baba said,
At that moment Vaish did not understand what Baba meant, but he took the umbrella with him back to Delhi.
Five years after Baba’s Mahasamadhi in 1978, Vaish was transferred to Lucknow. He left his extra luggage which had the umbrella given by Baba at his house in Delhi. After shifting to Lucknow, he started suffering from heart, liver, and spleen trouble. A check-up at Balrampur Hospital indicated that his spleen was enlarged by thirteen centimeters, but the doctors did not advise an operation due to his heart trouble.
He and his wife went to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi with no other treatment option available to him in Lucknow. Back in Delhi, Vaish was getting ready to go from his house to the hospital when his wife noticed the umbrella lying there. The idea came to her that by not keeping the umbrella gifted to him by Maharaj with him always, he might have been deprived of Baba’s protection. Shrimati Vaish escorted her husband to the hospital and hid the umbrella under his pillow.
Vaish was examined thoroughly again. In the reports, his spleen was still enlarged by thirteen centimeters. He was suggested to stay in the hospital for six months and he agreed that it was not advisable to operate on the spleen in his condition. He waa prescribed medicines to affect a cure. He was told to take a special tablet once a month that would reduce his spleen by two and a half centimeters over thirty days.
But after he took the first tablet that same day, he felt so much better that he asked the doctor to get his spleen examined again but the doctors refused to do that so soon. Vaish then sent his wife to the chief medical superintendent with a request to get his spleen examined again as a special case.
When his spleen was re-measured, it was found that his spleen had indeed reduced in size by thirteen centimeters. The doctors were all shocked as the tablet wouldn’t have been so effective. When they expressed their amazement to Vaish, he pulled out the umbrella and said he was saved, “By its grace.”
Neem Karoli Baba miracles- Allahabad flood
During a devastating flood at Allahabad of the Ganges and the Yamuna Rivers, huge destruction took place. The Hanuman Mandir on the banks of the River Ganges was in danger of being washed away.
All the worried Pujaries approached the Defense Minister, Dr. Katju, who was present in Allahabad. He said,
Instances when Baba Ji was at different places at the same time
During the official opening ceremony of a new Hanuman Mandir in Panki (it is near Kanpur), Babaji (Maharaj-Ji) was in Allahabad. But he had told everybody that he wouldn’t be able to attend the function personally.
On the morning of the opening ceremony in Panki, Babaji went into his room in Allahabad, and told his attendant,
“I am not keeping well; I shall sleep today.”
He covered himself with a blanket and was locked in from outside.
The next day some devotees came to Allahabad to distribute Prasad from the puja in Panki. They reported that Maharaj-Ji visited the event at Panki, even though he said, he wouldn’t.
The attendants of Baba Neem Karoli were stunned to hear this as Maharaj-Ji was in Allahabad all the time. But the devotees confirmed that he was also in Panki at the Hanuman temple from seven until twelve o’clock.
